About Mimi

Astrid (Mimi) Buendia has been a successful law professional for many years, but her love for animals moved her to pursue a career in their behavior and wellbeing.

She is an Animal Behaviorist Counselor certified by ABC College, specializing in dogs and cats. She has completed numerous studies in Master of Pet UnderstandingDog Bite InvestigationCertified Shelter Dogs CounselorCat Management and Animal Wellness; She understands and speaks dogs and cats languages.

She works in shelters and also with veterinary professionals; in addition, she has a private practice to help families and individuals, in need of her services with their pets, doing house calls and group classes. She also teaches seminars and she writes blogs for websites in animal hospitals and a pet store.

She has been with animals all her life, and she has witnessed how frustrating is for humans to be unable to communicate with their pets, or to have a broken relationship with them, due to lack of understanding. This usually ends in abandonment or a death sentence for the pet. In the USA alone, 6 million pets are euthanized every year, as a consequence of overpopulation and so called “bad behaviors”.

She realized that by training people, she could raise awareness about these problems, and by training their pets, she could save lives than otherwise would be in danger.

She found out that one way to accomplish this mission was by studying, then applying, the concept of Positive Obedience Training, respecting pets ‘nature. This would open, almost literally, many doors for otherwise confined pets. Mimi believes than instead of thinking about obedience training as a series of pointless rituals, think of it as a tool to help pets cope in the real world.

And for those pets that need homes, a trained pet is far easier to be adopted into a new family than an untrained one.

Statistics also show that puppies or kitties which receive early socialization, obedience, and temperament training (aggression prevention training) are far less likely to end up being destroyed, by the time they turn three years of age, than those that do not receive this early training.

Through her work, Mimi’s goal is to make your dog to trust, to respect, and to love you. We send our dogs to obedience schools to teach them how to understand what we want from them. But they also need to tell us what they need from us, and they do so every day. We simply have to open our eyes, ears and hearts to understand what they are trying to say.
